Sustainability – Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG)
In a nutshell, sustainability is about meeting our own needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
Why is being a sustainable organisation important?
If you ask anyone about sustainability most will have an awareness of global issues such as climate change, poverty and hunger, clean water and sanitation. It is also equally important to consider your business’s impact on your local community, and your ability to affect change that will benefit not only your organisation’s growth, but also the lives of others both now and in the future.
The social aspects of sustainability could be perceived as being just for the big companies, the reality is that every company that wants to have a future is going to have to consider how they operate socially and responsibly.
Governance is just how we make it all work. It’s about putting a programme around your environmental, social and governance measures and making sure that this is not just a one-time tick box, but that it is absolutely engrained in your company.
Apart from the fact that it is the right thing to do for the sustainability of our plant and generations to come, you might be missing out on positive opportunities for your business. Here’s some consideration to get you started:
- This is borne out by a recent Nielsen Global Corporate Sustainability Report that showed that 66% of consumers said they would pay more for a product if it came from a sustainable brand, with this rising to 73% for millennials (born 1980-1994)
- Your supply chains – there is a demand for ESG credentials of tier one suppliers, this is being passed down the supply chain. Are you ready for the opportunity? What are the risks if you don’t?
- 1 in 5 companies will look to pay for sustainable support (British Business Bank)
